ANTIQUE FRENCH XLG COPPER SUGAR JAM COOKING POT c1800 USE or DECORATE. Here is an unusual piece of early French copper cookware. It has dovetailed (cramp) seams, bottom and sides. Dates from the late 1700s to the early 1800s.
It is unlined and was most likely used to cook sugar in the making of caramel and jams and jellies. Very heavy , weighing nearly 6 lbs.
Top has a thick rolled rim. There is a heavy wrought iron handle attached, unusually, on the inside of the pot by three hefty copper rivets. This provides a bit more stability. When I bought this, the inside was covered with a thick black burnt on layer sugar? Most has been removed but the pot would benefit from a bit more polishing.
