We are happy to offer for your consideration a beautiful old French cooking pot from either the late 1700s or early 1800s. This is a piece that has been used by a French family continually for over 200 years. Its a history lesson onto itself. The sides and rolled rim are most certainly original.
The bottom has been replaced at least once and shows the sign of welding along the edge. This is the second set of handles that it has had. The first set were probably dangling down the side and attached by a triangle of rivets that are now sealed off. The current set of handles was popular in the late 1800s and are quite sturdy and attached by a set of four rivets by hand.
The rolled rim is fashioned by hammering copper around a branch that is steam molded into a circle. And then the Copper rim is hammered around it.Knowing the French as I do I can imagine the conversation around deciding to keep or not keep this pot. The current bottom which is at least the second is damaged and so this pot will no longer hold water. In order to be functional it would have needed another bottom added on. Im guessing this was the breaking point for the French family that decided to pass this on to a new owner. It will make a wonderful table centerpiece and a great holder for apples or fruit or even a fireplace kindling holder.
It will not however currently hold anything liquid. The French have a love for using things for which they were originally created for. With the bottom currently not functional for its original use, I think this was the end of the line for this pot and its original family. Now it is looking for a new home. Someone will that will appreciate its long Domestic history. It is looking for someone who will also add in their own history. Someone who will treasure it and someone who will use it. We have polished up the outside quite a bit, but it could use more polishing if you want a brighter copper look. Also the iron handle could certainly be made it brighter again if you would like. If you have any other questions please let us know. From our home in the French Alps to yours.
