FRENCH COPPER LÉCHEFRITE PAN c1780 FIREPLACE COOKING. Long copper pan, a "lèchefrites", stands on an iron support in a fireplace underneath meat which is cooking on a spit. It catches the drippings and is often filled with potatoes to cook at the same time. Primitive construction of bent copper, hand wrought iron handle. It was suggested that this was made by a local smith or an itinerant tinker who was able to work with sheet copper, turning it cleverly in a pan.

The copper is thin with the edges folded over and the corners folded up. Strong copper and iron rivets. Could benefit from a better cleaning of the interior if to be used for cooking. Rose colored copper; displays beautifully. 22 7/8" long 7½" wide 1 1/4" deep 10"long handle.
